BGAS – 3/2
Candidates with or without experience in the Painting inspection Industry. Most candidates will complete the BGAS-CSWIP Painting Inspector Grade 3 examination. Those candidates with previous Paint Inspection experience may complete the BGAS-CSWIP Painting Inspector Grade 2 examination.
Corrosion theory; surface preparation; surface Contaminants and tests; paint constituents and technology; solutions and dispersions; drying and curing properties and performance; specified painting conditions; cathodic protection; holiday/pinhole detection; paint application methods; paint/paint film testing; paint identification; metal coatings; paint faults; colour; inspection methods; specification requirements; health and safety and working practice.
Certification / Awarding Body:
- To recognize and identify the benefits/disadvantages of paint systems.
- To understand the importance of surface preparation.
- To understand methods of application and testing.
- To understand paint system inspections.
- To interpret requirements of standards.
- To meet the syllabus requirements for the BGAS-CSWIP Painting Inspector Examination.
Candidates MUST Bring:
Four Passport Size colour Photographs.
A valid eyesight certificate from a doctor or an optician showing satisfactory eyesight for near vision, permitting reading minimum of times roman N4, or equivalent type and size letters, at not less than 300mm on standard test chart for a near vision, in at least one eye, corrected or uncorrected. Candidates for the painting inspector will be required to have a colour perception assessment Ishihara 24 plate test or equivalent.
A complete form and full examination fee.
NOTE: Renewal can only be made within three months of the expiry date. Any application received after three month after expiry cannot be considered and can only be renewed by re-examination.
If the applicant is a holder of BGAS-CSWIP Site Coatings Inspector approval, It should be noted that day one of his syllabus will cover items which the applicant may be already convarsment in and therefore attendance on this day (although strongly recommended) is entirely at their description. Course duration may then be only four days. However, should the applicant decide against attendance on this day, there will be no reduction in course fee.
Four day training course with examination on day 5, or for less experienced candidates there is the opportunity to take the examination the following week.
No formal entry qualifications required, but a knowledge of dry abrasive blast cleaning or industrial paint application techniques would be advantageous.

EXAMINATION REQUIREMENTS: PAINTING INSPECTORS.
There are three grades of painting inspector, and three of Painting site operative.
Grade 3 painting Inspector.
Theory: Candidates shall be questioned on the general principles of the corrosion and the conditions that cause it to occur and therefore the mechanisms by which paint and/or coating system prevent corrosion.
Practical: Measurement of environmental conditions, surface profile and cleanliness, paint film thickness and discussion paint system and faults.
Grade 2 Painting Inspector.
The Grade 2 approved inspector requires the same breadth of knowledge as Grade 3; however, a greater theoretical and practical understanding is required including paint Technology & manufacture.
